The
MSU CVM Summer Food Systems Fellowship is a unique partnership
between MSU CVM and industry partners who are interested
in ensuring the supply of well-trained veterinarians to
work within the food animal industry.
The goal of this
program is to provide veterinary students interested in
a career as a veterinarian in the food animal industry
the opportunity to become exposed
to
the food industry through summer employment with agriculture
industry partners. Through seed money provided by the MSU
CVM Office for Strategic Initiatives, the program provides
matching salary to industry partners to hire first or second
year veterinary students to work in an agriculture related
position. The positions are structured to be beneficial
for both the student and the industry partner. In all cases,
the students are required to complete projects that are
beneficial to the industry partner and lead to a further
understanding of the food industry by the student. To further
broaden the summer experience, students and industry partners
participate in a variety of educational initiatives including
seminars and technology training workshops.
The program was launched in 2006 with
8 students participating in the program and 7 industry partners
. This year, the program
has grown to include 10 industry partners and 12 students. To learn
