Guidelines

Important Guidelines

You are not required to have completed all of the required courses before you apply to the DVM program. However, you must have completed them with a 2.0 passing grade before the DVM program starts in August.

Effective Fall 2006, all CVM science requirements must be completed with a 2.0 or "C" grade. Failure to meet this requirement will result in automatic withdrawal of your application. For students interesting in completing a baccalaureate degree using DVM credits, please see this site.

Beginning with the 2006-2007 admissions cycle, all applicants are invited to complete the supplemental application. We will send you the supplemental application via e-mail AFTER we have received your VMCAS application, and you will have five (5) working days to complete it. A $50 nonrefundable fee must be submitted with your application. If the supplemental application and fee are NOT received by the deadline, your application will be withdrawn from the process.

As of the 2006-2007 admissions cycle there is no fixed number of hours required for veterinary exposure/experience and animal exposure. The exposure/experience that you describe must demonstrate quality, motivation, interest, and understanding of the veterinary profession.

Beginning with the 2005-2006 admissions cycle, regular applicants are required to have 50 percent of the required science coursework completed by the October 1 deadline, and must have completed 75 percent of the coursework by January 5th of the admission cycle.  Additionally, any regular applicant that has completed required science coursework 8 years or more before applying will be reviewed by the associate dean and director of admission in consultation with the Committee on Student Admissions to determine the need to update his or her science coursework.  Failure to meet this requirement will result in automatic withdrawal of your application.

Since it is possible to matriculate at MSU CVM without a bachelor's degree, those students that have completed less than 90 semester hours at the time they submit the VMCAS application, or who have the potential to matriculate without a degree, will be notified of any deficiencies they have.

MSU CVM now considers applications on a "rolling" basis.  Please see this site for more information.

MSU Bachelor's Degree Programs

A bachelor's degree is not required for admission to the DVM program in veterinary medicine. However, a majority of those accepted to the DVM program have exceeded the minimum requirements and, in many cases, have earned a degree. Consequently, if you are planning to earn your bachelor’s degree while in the DVM program, consult MSU transfer credit policy for information on transfer credits in the event you decide to complete a baccalaureate degree using DVM credits. You must meet all the university general education requirements for graduation. These are outlined in the academic programs book that may be found at the registrar's website or visit the academic programs page.  Please contact the undergraduate advising center at 517/355-6510 or prevet@cvm.msu.edu to discuss the possibility of earning a bachelor’s degree concurrently with a DVM program.
