Preparing to Apply
Ordering Transcripts and Deadlines
Applying to a professional graduate program, such as human or veterinary medicine, demands a high level of maturity. The Committee on Student Admissions expects applicants to be responsible, diligent, courteous, honest, and professional during the entire application process. As colleges and universities strive to include more subjective, nonacademic assessments into their admissions process, your personal conduct during the process can have an impact on the final decision regarding admission. Taking initiative in communication, claiming responsibility for actions, demonstrating problem-solving skills, and showing sound judgment are characteristics required of every applicant.
Each year approximately 4,000 candidates apply to one of the 32 veterinary medical colleges in the United States and Canada. The application process can be overwhelming. Included on this page are recommendations, advice and some common pitfalls that applicants in previous years have encountered.
Each veterinary medical college has its own set of expectations, deadlines, and unique requirements. It is your responsibility to organize yourself and meet all the deadlines for all the schools to which you choose to apply.
MSU CVM now considers applications on a "rolling" basis.
Communication with Admissions Office: Each applicant will be able to log on to the site and review information about his or her application. Among other things, the site will indicate which transcripts we have evaluated, which letters of evaluation we have received, and whether we have received your GRE or MCAT scores; the site will also indicate whether your application is still under review, or if a decision has been made.
Applicants are required to maintain accurate contact information, including address, phone number, and a functioning e-mail address, with the Office of Admissions. Failure to do so may result in missed correspondence and deadlines, and subsequent withdrawal from the admissions process.
Most communication with MSU CVM is handled electronically admiss@cvm.msu.edu. Please send all your requests and concerns via this e-mail address. Failure to do so may cause you to miss deadlines and critical information pertaining to your application. The Admissions Office is open and conducts business during students' breaks; you must continue to check your e-mail and telephone messages for communications from MSU CVM admissions office.
Bear in mind that the staff at VMCAS is available to address questions or problems with the VMCAS application process ONLY! The VMCAS staff is not capable or authorized to answer questions regarding the specific requirements or policies of the participating veterinary schools. If you have questions specific to Michigan State University or the College of Veterinary Medicine, you must contact us directly at admiss@cvm.msu.edu.
Ordering Transcripts: In order to complete your application, you must submit an official transcript from every accredited college or university you have attended. This includes MSU students. Do not forget any school where you may have taken a single summer class, even if it was an elective. Each year several candidates are withdrawn from the process because they have not included transcripts from every school attended.
Remember to order the transcripts well in advance. All transcripts must be postmarked by October 1, 2007; we strongly recommend that you get your application materials in early. In fact, the earlier you get them in, the more likely you will be to move through the process faster and receive a final admissions decision sooner. Do not submit transcripts or test scores to VMCAS; doing so may delay the completion of your application or cause you to miss the final October 1 deadline.
If you attended any school outside of the United States in which the courses were not part of an established study-abroad program based in the United States, you must have your transcripts evaluated by a transcript evaluation service. For additional information, please check these web sites: www.jsilny.com, http://www.wes.org/, or http://www.aacrao.org/.

Rolling Admissions: MSU CVM considers applications on a "rolling" basis. We believe that this process benefits applicants and MSU CVM. Rolling admissions might be beneficial to applicants who are highly competitive, because the applicants will find out about a decision early in the process. We also believe that rolling admissions is beneficial to applicants who might not be very competitive, because they will find out early in the process if they should submit an application to a graduate program.
