Rolling Admissions

Michigan State University's (MSU) College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is pleased to announce that since last year we have adopted a new admissions model.  Our previous model involved all applicants progressing through each step of our five-step process as one group.  MSU CVM now considers applications on a "rolling" basis.

What does "rolling admissions" mean?

The process, similar to that in many undergraduate institutions, involves evaluating the applications in each step of the process when the applications are complete and ready to progress. The five steps that make up the CVM admission process are:

Step I - Scholastic Indicator Score
Step II - Supplemental Application
Step III - Application File Review
Step IV - Personal Interview
Step V - Final Selection

Under our former model, all applicants moved from Step I of the process through Step V at the same time; under the new model each application will move through the steps when the application is complete, without regard to the status of other applications in the pool.

This new process allows many applicants who submit a completed application early in the process to move through the process faster. In some instances, candidates may be interviewed as early as October, rather than waiting until February.

What exactly is different about the application process?

The application and selection process is primarily the same. Each applicant must still complete a VMCAS application and submit electronic letters of evaluation and payment to VMCAS. Transcripts and scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) must be submitted directly to the MSU CVM. What is new about the process is that once MSU CVM receives your VMCAS application, every applicant is invited to complete a supplemental application and submit a fee.

The remainder of the process remains the same, but with many applicants moving through the various stages of file review, interview, and final selection at different times.

How will I know what stage of the process my application is in?

MSU CVM has an on-line status report.  Each applicant is able to log on to the site and review information about his or her application. Among other things, the site indicates which transcripts we have evaluated, which letters of evaluation we have received and whether we have received your GRE or MCAT scores; the site also indicates whether your application is still under review, or if a decision has been made.

Does this mean the deadlines have changed?

NO! MSU CVM will continue to accept applications until October 1st of each year, if October 1 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, then the deadline is the following Monday.  As always, we strongly recommend that you get your application materials in early. In fact, the earlier you get them in, the more likely you will be to move through the process faster and receive a final admissions decision sooner. In line with the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) agreement, applicants will still have until April 15 to accept an offer.

Important note: While rolling admissions and submitting applications early are generally intended to speed the application process, there is no guarantee that any one applicant will receive a decision until the end of the selection process in late February or early March. Applying to MSU CVM requires the same patience that is needed for applying through a different process or to another veterinary medical college.

Does this mean there are new criteria?

NO, the shift to rolling admissions will have no impact on the criteria by which each applicant is evaluated.  MSU CVM will continue to treat grade-point averages, academic, and life experiences in the same manner.  MSU CVM will continue to follow its five-step selection process and similar criteria as in the past.

Be sure to contact your undergraduate advisor at your institution to make sure that you are fully prepared to apply at the time you are considering submitting your application.

Why did MSU adopt a rolling admissions process?

We believe that this process benefits applicants and MSU CVM. Rolling admissions might be beneficial to applicants who are highly competitive, because the applicants will find out about a decision early in the process. We also believe that rolling admissions is beneficial to applicants who might not be very competitive, because they will find out early in the process if they should submit an application to a graduate program.

If there are questions regarding our process, please e-mail your questions to admiss@cvm.msu.edu
